Australian property sector sets sights on Asia Asian investors have found themselves to be the new targets of the Australian property sector. With Chinese buyers increasingly snapping up prestigious Adelaide real estate, the industry has realised there is significant untapped potential in that part of the world.
Alexander Ouwens, director of Harcourts Ouwens Casserly, told the Australian that Google Analytics data has shown Chinese interest in Australian real estate websites was up 60 per cent on last year – a figure that will no doubt soar further in the near-term.
“This is based around the strength of the Significant Investment Visa scheme and we’ve noticed an increase in the number of Chinese purchasers at inspections and those actually purchasing properties,” he said.
However, Asian investors are only interested in homes with specific features and have very different criteria for their homes than other other buyers. Mr Ouwens explained that feng shui, having the right number in the address of the house and the way the property faces are all important to the Asian market.
In a bid to ensure Chinese buyers are correctly supported, Harcourts Casserly hired two Chinese agents to bridge the gap between the two countries. “The legislation and laws for buying property are different between Australia and China and it’s really foreign to them to navigate the Australian property maze, so this is to make them comfortable in making their acquisitions,” Mr Ouwens said to the newspaper.
However, Asian buyers are generally only accessing the top end of the property market, as the Significant Investment Visa requires significant capital. What’s more, the flow-on effect is that people will then buy accommodation for their children that are studying nearby. Nevertheless, Australia is more than happy to welcome investment in the prime sector and there are definitely plenty of opportunities available in the country.
According to new RP Data, house prices will double over the next decade in some areas. Melbourne is one place identified as poised for growth and investing in a home there could see buyers enjoy a 100 per cent return over the next ten years, Yahoo reported. This is being bolstered by strong demand.

Crows captain Nathan van Berlo puts house on market

HE’S battled it out in the country’s most prestigious football arenas and now Adelaide Crows captain Nathan van Berlo is selling his own piece of turf.   
Van Berlo’s Tod St, Glenelg North property has been home to several teammates over the years including fallen angel Kurt Tippett, but now the Crows captain and his girlfriend Sally are on the move.
 
He has built a three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse in the eastern suburbs and says he will miss the coastal lifestyle but that living closer to Adelaide Oval will come in handy.
 
“It’s come to a time where I’m just looking for a change and I’ll definitely miss Glenelg but we’ll start playing footy out at Adelaide Oval next year so I might spend a bit more time in and around the city which will make it a bit easier being out that side of town.”
 
Van Berlo bought the house in 2007 and said he was attracted by Glenelg’s coastal atmosphere.

 
“I really loved the lifestyle down in Glenelg and I’ve always grown up near the beach and I found a nice little low maintenance place that was within walking distance of the beach and was close enough to the club and it suited me fine,” he said.
 
Van Berlo is the latest in a series of Adelaide AFL identities to move up the housing ladder.
 
The 1950s-built home has three-bedrooms and van Berlo said he has landscaped the garden, installed new floors and renovated the kitchen and bathrooms.
 
Van Berlo, who is out of action with an injured knee, said he loved putting his feet up and watching TV, but was keen to return to the field.
 
“I’m more than happy to put my feet down and start playing again,” he said.
 
“I certainly don’t enjoy being in rehab, I don’t think anyone does but it won’t be too far away now and I’ll be back out there. Van Berlo said the house had been home to several Crows players throughout the years. “I’ve lived with Bernie Vince for a couple of years, I lived with Tippo for a while, and Patrick Dangerfield stayed with us for a couple of weeks when he first got drafted,” he said.
 
“It can accommodate a few footballers and we’ve certainly had a few laughs there over the years and I really do love the place and it’s going to be sad to see it go,” he said. The home goes under the hammer on May 18. Bidding starts at $500,000.
